  • Nikolaus Friedreich - German pathologist and neurologist, described the central nervous system disorder known as Friedreich's ataxia, a degenerative disease with sclerosis of the spinal cord which affects a person's speech, balance and coordination.
  • November 29 - Jean-Martin Charcot - French neurologist, known as the "the Napoleon of the neuroses." He was the first to describe multiple sclerosis.
