Deaths

  • January 28 - Samuel Thomas von Sömmering - German anatomist, discovered the macula in the retina of the human eye which is responsible for central vision. The destruction of the macula is known as macular degeneration.
  • December 17 - Dr. Mason Fitch Cogswell - Deaf advocate. First deaf father of a deaf child to advocate for quality education of deaf children in America. One of the three co-founders of the American School for the Deaf.[1]
  • December 30 - Alice Cogswell - Deaf student. First pupil to attend the National School for the Deaf.[2]
