  • February 28 - Gerhard Hansen discovers Mycobacterium leprae, the cause of leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease. [1]
  • April 9 - The Arkansas State legislature, under the leadership of Governor James Henderson Berry, establishes the Arkansas Lunatic Asylum. The hospital was renamed the Arkansas State Hospital for Nervous Diseases in 1905 and then to Arkansas State Hospital in 1933.[2][3]


December 11 - Tilly Aston - Australian disability advocate. Aston was a blind writer and teacher who formed the Victorian Association of Braille Writers and the Association for the Advancement of the Blind.
