  • January 18 - Hermann Snellen - Dutch ophthalmologist, introduced the Snellen chart to study visual acuity.
  • June 24 - Grover Cleveland - American President. Cleveland was an assistant teacher at the New York Institute for the Blind, now known as the New York Institute for Special Education in New York, New York where he influenced Fanny Crosby, a famed American lyricist and lobbyist for the Blind.[2]
