  • January 4 - Silas Weir Mitchell - American physician, first to provide a detailed account of phantom limb syndrome.
  • December 27 - Charles Martin Hall, developer of the electrolytic method of producing aluminum cheaply, bringing the metal into wide commercial use in products including wheelchairs and portable ramps. [1]
