  • July 4 - Lou Gehrig, recently diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, tells a crowd at Yankee Stadium who had gathered to recognize Gehrig, that he considers himself "The luckiest man on the face of the earth".[1]


Births

  • February 11 - American author, Jane Yolen, is born. Yolen wrote many books featuring characters who overcome the difficulties caused by their disabilities including the Christopher Medal award-winning book, The Seeing Stick, a book about a blind Chinese girl who learns to see with her fingers.[3]
