  • September 18 - The first international Paralympic Games open in Rome, Italy in conjunction with the Olympic Games. Only athletes with spinal cord injury participate.
  • Sir Ludwig "Poppa" Guttmann founds the British Sports Association of the Disabled.


Births

  • February 29 - Tony Robbins - Motivational speaker and author, has a subclinical manifestation of the disease known as acromegaly (closely related to gigantism), which doctors told Robbins was responsible for his remarkable growth spurts as a teenager, as well as his large hands and feet (He is 6 feet 7 inches tall, or 201 cm). [1]
  • December 3 - Daryl Hannah - American actress. Known for her roles in Blade Runner, Splash, Wall Street, Roxanne, and the Kill Bill series. Hannah was diagnosed as a child with borderline autism. [2]


Deaths

  • September 22 - Melanie Klein - Austrian-born British psychoanalyst. Klein was the first person to use traditional psychoanalysis with young children.[3]
