  • February 1 - The 2nd Winter Paralympic Games are opened in Geilo, Norway. These Games featured a demonstration of sledge downhill racing. In addition, "all classes of athletes with locomotor disabilities were able to participate."[1]
  • June 21 - The 6th Paralympic Games are opened in Arnhem, Netherlands.


  • May 29 - Casey Tibbs - Track and Field Athlete. Tibbs is a double-amputee and Paralympic Gold Metalist and the first active-duty military member to compete in a Paralympic Games.[2]
