Government & Advocacy

  • Deaf Australia, formerly known as the Australian Association of the Deaf, was founded.
  • October 2 - The Air Carrier Access Act is signed. It "prohibits discrimination in air transportation by domestic and foreign air carriers against qualified individuals with physical or mental impairments. Requirements address a wide range of issues including boarding assistance and certain accessibility features in newly built aircraft and new or altered airport facilities." [1]
  • October 8 - The Education of the Handicapped Amendments of 1986 (PL 99-457) was signed which added part H, Handicapped Infants and Toddlers, to the Education for All Handicapped Children Act dictating that each family and handicapped child receive (1) a multidisciplinary assessment of unique needs and the identification of services appropriate to meet such needs; and (2) a written individualized family service plan developed by a multidisciplinary team, including the parent or guardian.[2]

  • May 29 - Dylan Postl - American professional wrestler. Postl is known as Hornswoggle or Little Bastard as part of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).[4]


  • May 11 - Sonny Terry - American Blues musician. Blind. Known for his ability to play the harmonica and his "joyous whoops". He was also part of the first cast of the Broadway musical comedy, Finian's Rainbow.[5]
