- July 26 - The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is passed. It "prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, State and local government, public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation, and telecommunications. It also applies to the United States Congress."[1]
- October 13 - The Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) is established as the centrally funded reasonable accommodations program for employees with disabilities in the U.S. Department of Defense. Accommodations are provided to over 1,300 employees in its first fiscal year.[2]
- October 19 - The National Wheelchair Basketball Hall of Fame display is dedicated at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA.[3]

- February 8 - George de Mestral, creator of Velcro hook and loop fasteners, a common component in orthotics and adapted clothing. [4] [5]
