  • June 22 - In Sutton v. United Airlines, Inc.(No. 97-1943), The U.S. Supreme Court definition of "disabled" under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The court held that the petitioners were not actually disabled under subsection (A) of the disability definition because they could fully correct their visual impairments. The court also determined that petitioners were not "regarded" by respondent as disabled under subsection (C).[1]


  • March 26 - The Voice Browser Working Group was first established by the World Wide Web Consortium.[2]


  • August 25 - Byron Benton Burnes - American teacher and deaf advocate. 16th President of the National Association of the Deaf from 1946 to 1964, the longest presidential tenure so far. Teacher at the California School for the Deaf.[3]
