  • 1913 - The first true stainless steel is produced by Harry Brearley at Brown Firth Laboratories. Stainless steel is used in for a wide variety of surgical and dental applications.

  • 1946 - H.G. Wells - English author, best known for his science fiction writings (e.g., War of the Worlds, The Time Machine). In later life, he developed diabetes and in 1934, became a co-founder and first president of what is now Diabetes UK, the leading charity for people living with diabetes in the UK.[2]
