  • 1821 - Hermann von Helmholtz - German physician, inventor of the ophthalmoscope, an instrument used to examine the inside of the human eye. Today people with diabetes mellitus are required to have regular ophthalmoscopic eye examinations to screen for diabetic retinopathy.
