Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD)

From ATWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) is a milder form of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). BMD occurs when the X-chromosome produces low levels or poor quality dystrophin, a protein that surrounds muscle fibers and helps muscle cells work properly. Like DMD, BMD is almost exclusively found in males.

Becker Muscular Dystrophy was discovered by Peter Emil Becker in the 1950's.

Symptoms are the same as DMD except the degeneration is much slower. Onset occurs in the late 20's or early 30's.
