- 1982 - The International Day of People with Disabilities, established by the United Nations’ General Assembly in 1982, is observed. Formerly known as the International Day of Disabled Persons until December 2007, this day seeks to promote awareness regarding disability issues as well as expanding international human rights standards for this population.[1]
Births
- 1857 - Karl Koller - Austrian ophthalmologist, who introduced cocaine as a local anesthetic for eye surgery.
- 1960 - Daryl Hannah - American actress. Known for her roles in Blade Runner, Splash, Wall Street, Roxanne, and the Kill Bill series. Hannah was diagnosed as a child with borderline autism.[1]
Deaths
- 1987 - Andrew Jackson Foster - American deaf teacher. Founded thirty-one schools and many other programs for deaf people in thirteen African countries. First African American to graduate from Gallaudet College. [2]
