- 1974 - The first state-wide telecommunications relay service began in Connecticut by Converse Communication Corporation.[1]
Births
- 1847 - Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of the electric lamp. Today, touch and voice-activated switches and environmental controls allow people with disabilities to control lights. [2] [3]
- 1939 - American author, Jane Yolen, is born. Yolen wrote many books featuring characters who overcome the difficulties caused by their disabilities including the Christopher Medal award-winning book, The Seeing Stick, a book about a blind Chinese girl who learns to see with her fingers.[4]
