General Questions

What is the purpose of ATWiki?

The ATWiki is an encyclopedia of information on assistive technology. Articles published here will be viewable from the AssistiveTech.net website and also published as RSS feeds.

The information on ATWiki is contributed freely by the public, and does not necessarily reflect the views of CATEA, AssistiveTech.net, or The Georgia Institute of Technology. Please see our disclaimers for more information.

Are there restrictions on who can use ATWiki?

No. Anyone can contribute articles, and all articles on the site are viewable by the general public.

What subject matter and writing styles are appropriate for ATWiki? How do I know if my article is okay to post here?

Our basic policy is that all writing about assistive technology is appropriate, except for news items and advertisements. Please see our Acceptable Content Policy page for further details on appropriate content.

How do I become an author?

Becoming an author requires no specific permission; just create an account and start contributing! After you have written or updated several articles you may be interested in contributing at an advanced level, and can request to become an ATWiki Editor. Please see the Editor page for more information.

How do I create an account?

To create an account, select Log in (on the top right of this page) then create an account. You need only provide a username and password.

What is my User page and User talk page?

As a logged-in user, you will be able to create your own user page and user talk page. When you are logged in, you will see your username displayed at the top right of the page. Click on this to get to your user page, which you can edit in the same way as any ATWiki page. Biographical information and links to personal projects are appropriate, and you may even use your user page as a mini homepage.

You also have a User talk page. You can access this by clicking on the my talk link next to your username at the top right of the page. Other people may write messages in your user talk page by editing it, and you can respond. See Talk page for more.

Basic Usage

How can I learn to use ATWiki? Are there user manuals, tutorials, or other documentation available?

Some intructions on using ATWiki are built-in, and you should be able to do a few things within this site without having to read a user manual: creating an account, and then creating a new page of content or edit existing content. Simply follow directions given within the pages as you view or edit them.

Please see our Help pages for information specific to ATWiki that isn't covered in this FAQ. If you have a question that is not answered in this FAQ you can hopefully get an answer by one of the following:

  1. Search through the documentation at the External Resources link, above.
  2. Email us at atwiki@coa.gatech.edu and ask your question.
  3. Add the question to the bottom of this page! We are alerted to changes on this page and will try to make sure that new questions get answered.

How do I edit a page?

To edit a page, simply click the edit link that appears on each page. This is in the form of a tab, below the page header. A form will appear, containing the existing markup. When you have finished making modifications, click the Save button to commit your changes. To learn more about editing please refer to the external Editor Manual and Editing resources.

How do I create a new page?

Several methods exist for creating a new page on ATWiki. Please see Help:Starting a new page for full details.

How should I title my page?

For now, titles are up to the author, but please avoid using ampersands (&) in your titles or making them too long.

How do I categorize my page? How do I create a new category?

Categorizing your page is done by placing special Category text within the content of the page. Please see Help:Categories for details.

To create a new category just follow the instructions for adding Category text to your article. The new Category will appear automatically in the ATWiki Categories page.

How do I include media files in my page? How do I attach uploaded documents to my page?

Information specific to images is located at Help:Images, and more technical information about documents is at Meta's Uploading images and other files and Meta's Images, Table, Video, and Sound help.

How do I delete a page, or revert back to the previous state of a page?

Delete and rollback permissions are given only to Editors and Administrators. Please review our Acceptable Content Policy before requesting that an article be removed or rolled-back to a previous state. How do I view the printable form of a page?

Stylesheets are present which automatically style a page appropriately when it is printed; using the print or print preview function within your browser should render the page in a printable form.

You can also view this printable form using the printable version link in the toolbox.

What are discussion (talk) pages?

All content pages have an attached discussion (talk) page, accessed through the discussion tab on the top of the content area. Any logged-in user can contribute to discussion pages, and other people may respond on that same page.
