  • 1940 - Ida May Fuller became the first person to receive an old-age monthly benefit check under the new Social Security law. She paid in $24.75 between 1937 and 1939 on an income of $2,484. Her first check, dated January 31, was for $22.54.[1]

Deaths

  • 1914 - James Addams Beaver - American politician. Beaver was the Governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Second Battle of Ream's Station resulting in the amputation of one of his legs.[2]
