Government & Advocacy
- 1996 - Willie Brown, a partially blind politician, became the the first African-American mayor of San Fransisco, California. While he was a member of the California State Assembly, Brown began to lose his eyesight due to retinitis pigmentosa.[1]
- 2002 - A unanimous vote by the U.S. Supreme Court on Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky Inc. v. Williams further defined which types of impairment are considered a ‘disability’ under the ADA. It was ruled that certain impairments – in this case, carpal tunnel syndrome - was not covered under ADA since it did not “substantially limit a major life activity”.
Deaths
- 2002 - Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov - Russian Physicist. Prokhorov won the Nobel Prize for Physics for his pioneering work with lasers and masers.[2]
