  • 1868 - Christopher Sholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel Soule receive a patent (#79,265) for the first practical type writing machine. They licensed the patent to Remington & Sons, and in 1874 the first commercial typewriter, the "Sholes & Glidden Type Writer," was sold. Typewriters (and now computers) provide an alternative means to produce written communication for people who have trouble writing by hand. [1] [2]
