  • 1998 - Deaf President Now (DPN), a student-led protest at Gallaudet University ends with the Board of Trustees announcing that Dr. I. King Jordan would become the first deaf president of the university. DPN supporters believed that the world's only university for deaf and hard of hearing students should be run by a person who was deaf. When a hearing president was named, students led a week-long protest. "It also was a unique coming together of Gallaudet students, faculty and staff with the national deaf community—all bound by clear and defined goals." [1]
