- 1888 - Oberlin Smith publishes his discovery of magnetic recording in Electrical World magazine. Prior to magnetic recording Thomas Edison had been working with recording using grooves in tinfoil. Magnetic recording is the basis of audio, video and computer recording devices today.[1]
Deaths
- 1894 - Hermann von Helmholtz - German physician, inventor of the ophthalmoscope, an instrument used to examine the inside of the human eye. Today people with diabetes mellitus are required to have regular ophthalmoscopic eye examinations to screen for diabetic retinopathy.
