A ticket taker and greeter at a large movie theater needs to be able to tear 5-10 movie tickets at a time from moviegoers who are entering the theater. The woman had an aneurysm as an infant which resulted in right-sided weakness, only gross grip (inability to release or prehend), and no fine motor control of her right hand. She has normal function of her left side. She has mild retardation, but appears to have good safety judgement.

Currently she is able to tear one ticket at a time by placing a ticket under her left hand to stabilize it, and tearing the stub off with her sound hand. Theater policy requires that the tickets are torn in two, with one end being placed in a box, and the other end given back to the theater customer. Candice is unable to efficiently do her job during peak movie viewing times, and she is often overwhelmed with the volume of tickets she has to process.


A custom device was constructed utilizing the cutting action of a pair of tabletop scissors (Sammons and Preston catalog). The scissors are mounted on a Plexiglas frame that holds one of the blades stationary while allowing the other to rotate within a confined space. Tickets are placed on a small platform under the stationary blade with the employee�s sound hand.

Once the tickets are in place, she is able to use either hand to press down on the handle of the freely moving blade, thus cutting the tickets in half. The ticket stub is given back to the customer and the remaining half is kept for bookkeeping purposes. The device itself is compact and low profile, and can be conveniently placed on top of a small table. In this case, the device was placed on top of the movie ticket stub receptacle for easy access.

Repeatability of Solution

This woman needed a ticket cutter which was low-profile. She did not have access to an electrical outlet and she was scheduled to work during peak hours. Therefore, we needed a device that was easy to operate, was reliable, allowed for cutting of up to five to ten tickets, required no electrical power and was cosmetically appealing. The EZ Tickut meets these requirements, though several issues have come up during actual use. Additional components for the device may be fabricated in order to address these issues. For instance, tickets tend to fly off the device if quite a few are cut at the same time. To remedy this problem, a small bin on the side of the device could be mounted to capture these stubs as they slip off the side. In summary, the device is functional though it needs some refinement.

Note also that this accommodation involved a customization of commercial AT product -- a jig to correctly position a set of table top scissors. Jigs that hold a device in place for operation, or which help position materials in relation to the device, can provide useful accommodations for a variety of job tasks.
